It’s very difficult to seperate Nick Drake’s 3 albums in terms of quality. “Five Leaves Left” contains three of my Top-Ten favourite Drake compositions in the form of River Man, Day Has Done and Way To Blue. I don’t think that these songs would have worked as well if they had been produced in the style of Bryter Later. They just work bare, in their original form.

I simply can’t understand how this album flopped commercial. Obviously it didn’t help that Nick was reluctant to promote his work in any shape of form - but still you would have thought that word would have spread more than it obviously did. The world probably wasn’t ready for him at the time, heh.

The mood of the LP is quite autumnal, which is inspired in part by the lyrics as well as the compositions themselves which are quite “breezy”. Listen to the string arrangements to see what I mean!

“Five Leaves Left” is arguably the best starting part for someone that is new to Nick’s work - due to the faultless quality of the arrangments as well as the length of the album itself (especially in comparison to Pink Moon - which would have got my vote instead if it wasn’t for this factor!)
