Nick first met Robert whilst attending Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge in University. He ended up producing Nick’s first two albums, establishing a close relationship with the singer over that time. In fact - outside of Nick’s immediate family - most of the insight about Nick’s character came from Kirby in the years after his death.

Nick insisted on bringing in Robert to help write the string arrangements for Five Leaves Left even though he had little previous experience in the area. Who knows what the album would have turned out like without Kirby’s lush strings? I can’t really picture Riverman without them. Besides Nick’s voice they are what make the song for me.

Away from working with Nick, Robert has worked with a number of other prominent recording artists including Elvis Costello and Paul Weller.
